What is QIS ?
Viva has developed the Quality Improvement System (QIS) to help Christian organizations working with children at risk to improve the quality of their work. QIS is designed for use in networks.
Who should use QIS ?
QIS is designed for networks of people, church run activities, Christian community-based initiatives and small to medium sized grassroots organizations that work with children at risk. The main thing is that they are committed to improving the quality of their work.
How does QIS work ?
• Standards
QIS makes organizations aware of internationally recognized standards that are relevant for work with children at risk. Viva has worked in collaboration with international standard bearers to make their standards accessible and comprehensible to grassroots organizations and church projects.
QIS uses God’s word to throw light on the standards and asks the questions ‘What does the bible say about these standards in our work ?’
• Assessment
QIS encourages and helps organizations to assess their performance against the standards
• Training
When organizations have identified where they are against standards, they define key areas where they may need to improve and then receive training around that area.
• Improvement
Following training, organizations draw up Action Plans for improvement. This journey towards improvement is based on best available methods of learning and can involve sharing experiences, exchange visits, peer mentoring and mentoring by experts.
• Certification
Organizations get the chance to demonstrate and celebrate the improvements they have made through QIS by receiving certificates linked to the improvement areas. The journey of improvement in each of the 6 units continues throughout the 2 year period.
The QIS quality levels have received external approval from some standard bearers and the international agencies that are part of Viva’s Quality Standards Reference Group. They are recognized as a significant achievement for organizations and projects.
There are two levels of quality recognized by QIS. These are Foundations in quality and Accountability. These levels are part of an ongoing journey of quality improvement for organizations and projects to become all God intends.
Organizations that reach QIS Foundations and above will also receive a Viva mark of commitment to quality to show they are on a journey of quality improvement. This mark is recognized by some international standard bearers, notably People In Aid for People Care, Keeping Children Safe for Child Protection and Mango for Financial Accountability.
QIS Structure
QIS is based on an organizational development framework. There are 7 units covered by QIS. These are:
